Glendalough
Glendalough is positioned in a glaciated valley in County Wicklow with 2 lakes and is one of Ireland’s most famous landmarks.
The monastic site dates back to the 6th century and was founded by Saint Kevin. The ancient ruins of Glendalough consist of several churches and a stunning 30 metre high round tower. The remains of an old stone fort and three stone crosses can be found between the Upper and Lower lakes, which are stations on the pilgrimage route at Glendalough.
The valley stretches for roughly 3km and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The upper lake is the original site of the settlement and features Temple-na-Skellig, Saint Kevin’s cell, Saint Kevin’s bad and a number of high crosses.
The area is an ideal place for walking, you can choose a short stroll around the ancient ruins or if you’re feeling more adventurous, choose from a number of more challenging mountain hikes through the valley and around the lakes.
Close to the site is an interactive centre which features audio visual displays and has a model of the settlement and friendly staff are on hand to answer any questions.
