Allihies Copper Mines

The charming little village of Allihies in Cork, with its brightly coloured houses, is the last village at the end of the Beara Peninsula. It sits between a rocky mountain range and the rugged Atlantic Coast.

Copper was mined in the hill behind the village from 1812, when a rich copper deposit was discovered in the area, and life here changed forever when the Industrial Revolution spread to one of the most remote parts of Ireland.

The Allihies Copper Mine Museum is dedicated to the history of copper mining in the area. After visiting the museum you might like to venture along the Allihies Copper Mine Trail. These self guided walks are signposted and range from 1.5km to 10km, with stunning views of the wild landscape and coastline.
