Blackstairs Eco Trails & Shepherd’s Huts
Our Eco Centre is situated 5 kilometres from the Georgian village of Borris in South Carlow, at the foot of the Backstairs Mountains. It is a beautiful area with Mount Leinster looking down at us from the East and to the South there is the magnificent River Barrow, 119 miles long and Ireland’s second longest river. The area is perfect for walking, hiking and cycling. If you are into nature or wildlife, this area of South Carlow is completely unspoilt and rich in biodiversity.
Blackstairs Eco Trails is a Gold accredited Eco Tourism, destination certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. We do not use fertilisers or sprays on our land and we have been recording the wild life here for over 40 years. There is a young, 5-acre Oak wood which guests can explore. There is a trail through the wood which is a haven for birds, summer migrants and mammals. We are very lucky to have a small lake which guests can use for swimming and a canoe for romantic trips round our small island. There are fields, a wild flower meadow and a classical Old Rose Garden for guest’s enjoyment.
Our Eco Barn has all the facilities guests need for a stay in our Shepherds Huts or for attending any of our workshops. There is also a BBQ area with seating and a small stream running through the chill- out zone in front to the Barn.
A wooden swing along our old Beech walk is always in use. We have a charging point for guests driving an electric vehicle. If you see a cat around the place, her name is Piper and she is very friendly!
We look forward to welcoming you to Blackstairs Eco Trails.
Mary and Robert.
