Athlone Castle

Athlone Castle is located in Athlone, County Westmeath and dates back to the 12th century.

Standing at a strategic crossing point on the River Shannon, the castle has played a crucial role in the events that shaped Ireland.

It was built for King John by Bishop John de Gray of Norwich and was designed to defend the crossing point.

The castle underwent extensive renovations and reopened in 201, transformed into a multi sensory experience with family friendly multimedia displays and interactive games guiding you through its halls.

Visitors are transported to the centre of the Siege of Athlon, a 1691 battle, through a 360 degree cinematic experience. Audio visual installations, 3D maps and sculptures and artefacts bring Athlone’s stories and characters to life, and children and adults alike can dress up in themed costumes too.

The castle also has courtyard picnic facilities with beautiful views of the town.
