Fore Abbey

The village of Fore in County Westmeath is home to the ruins of a 7th century Christian monastery founded by Saint Fechin.

It is believed that 300 monks lived in the community. Visitors can see the remains of Saint Fechin’s church and will also see one of the 18 Fore crosses that are spread over 10 kilometres on roadways and in fields.

The “Seven Wonders of Fore” include the monastery built on a bog, the mill without a race, the lintel raised by Saint Fechin’s prayers, the wate that flows uphill, the tree with the three branches, the tree that wont burn and the water that wont boil.

The site is free to visit.
