Inishbofin

Why not take a trip out to Inishbofin Island for a real taste of island life!  Also known as the “island of the white cow” , the island is 8km long by 3km wide and has a population of 200. It is located 10km west of the gorgeous village of Cleggan and reached by taking  a 30 minute ferry ride from here.

Inishbofin boasts a rich history, spectacular scenery , award winning beaches and crystal clear waters.

Island visitors can witness some of Connemara’s best preserved heritage, Bronze Age landscapes, Cromwell’s 17th century star shaped fort , ancient churches and burial grounds and a 7th century monastery .

There are 3 looped walks, each offering incredible panoramic views of the Connemara mountains, cliffs, sea stacks and seal colonies. The island is a breeding area for many species of birds and one of the rare places in Ireland the corncrake can be found!

The island also has a rich musical heritage and plays host to many sessions during the summer months including the Inishbofin Arts Festival. There are 3 hotels on the island, a hostel, a campsite and B&B’s and cottages to rent if you feel like extending your stay. Tickets for day trips to Inishbofin island can be bought on the ferry itself which departs from Cleggan pier.
