Kylemore Abbey
Tucked away in the heart of Connemara, Kylemore Abbey is a haven of history, beauty and serenity. Set on a 100 acre estate, it has been home to a Benedictine order of nuns for over 100 years.
The Abbey was built in the late 1800’s by a wealthy businessman, Mitchell Henry MP as a romantic gift inspired by his love for his wife Margaret and his hopes for his beloved Ireland. He spent years creating an estate to show just what could be achieved in the remote depths of Connemara.
The Abbey and surrounding mountains and lakes are steeped in history, from engineering initiatives to model farms , to tales of tragedy and royal visits.
While visiting the abbey you can also explore the lakeshore and woodland walks and visit Ireland’s largest Victorian walled garden.
There is a café and tea house serving delicious, wholesome food and home baked goods. A history talk takes place three times a day in the Abbey and you can take a guided tour of the walled garden during the summer months.
The craft and design shop sell Kylemore Abbey pottery and award winning chocolate made by the Benedictine nuns .
