{"id":9893,"date":"2025-06-04T09:31:19","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T09:31:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/letstravelireland.ie\/northern-ireland\/?post_type=job_listing&#038;p=9893"},"modified":"2025-06-04T10:04:04","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T10:04:04","slug":"st-columba-heritage-centre-aras-cholmcille","status":"publish","type":"job_listing","link":"https:\/\/letstravelireland.ie\/northern-ireland\/listing\/st-columba-heritage-centre-aras-cholmcille\/","title":{"rendered":"St Columba Heritage Centre (\u00c1ras Cholmcille)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>EXPLORING THE HISTORY OF THE CITY&#8217;S FOUNDING FATHER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Located in the courtyard of the magnificent Long Tower Church, \u00c1ras Cholmcille, or St Columba&#8217;s Heritage Centre, houses a precious collection of artefacts including a rare facsimile of the Book of Kells and a silver chalice from 1604 depicting what Doire&#8217;s great Teampall M\u00f3r might have looked like in the golden age of Celtic Christianity. <\/p>\n<p>The centre also unspools the story of this charismatic but complex saint from his birth in Gartan, Co Donegal to founding a monastic settlement in Derry, his exile to Iona and the remarkable legacy of Columban culture in Scotland and the north east of England. Narrated by the Catholic Bishop of Derry Donal McKeown, this little clip is just a taster of the wonders within St Columba&#8217;s holy precinct known locally as Long Tower. <\/p>\n<p>The museum is open Monday to Friday, 10.30 am to 3 pm, Saturdays from 11 am to 3 pm. It is closed Sundays but is available for groups by prior arrangement. There is no entry fee. Donations are appreciated but we only ask people to give what they can afford.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artifacts &#038; Manuscripts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Includes a range of artefacts and manuscripts that includes a facsimile of the Book of Kells, as well as items and objects relating to the 200 year history of the building.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interactive Demos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the centre there are various interactive screens that allow you to read, watch videos and view galleries that tell the story of both St. Columba and the building itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Events<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With 3 floors and ample space in a historic building, complete with dining space and demonstration areas the centre well equipped for various events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Facilities include dining area, toilets, parking nearby, Wi-Fi, Guided Tours, and Euro Accepted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":9906,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_links_to":"","_links_to_type":0,"_promoted":"","_job_location":"59-61 Long Tower Street, Derry -
