A World Of History Under Your Feet – Aillwee Burren Experience

Located in the heart of the Burren, county Clare, with spectacular views of Galway Bay, Aillwee Burren Experience is a wonder to all, and one of the most well known attractions in the area. With geology and history stretching over 330 million years, Aillwee inspires awareness of the Burren underground landscape along the Wild Atlantic Way, with an underground experience that encapsulates the geological history of the unique, lunar-like Burren region.

Expert guides will accompany and inform you during a leisurely tour, consisting of a 45 minute stroll through its beautiful caverns, over bridged chasms, under weird formations, and alongside a thunderous waterfall, which sometimes gently sprays the unsuspecting visitor! This fantastic guided cave tour has been sympathetically redeveloped five times over 45 years and now takes visitors on a 1km round trip into the Aillwee Mountain, with 90 metres of limestone overhead at its deepest point. Learn how its magnificent calcite structures form, explore the hibernation chambers of the European brown bear, dating from 10,500 years ago to 4,500 years ago – showing an impressive timeline of cave habitation.

Alongside these fascinating and educational guided tours, the cave has played host to theatrical plays, opera and ballad singers, traditional concerts, mountain bike races, ghost tours, and even an underground fashion show!

Birds Of Prey were introduced to Aillwee in 2008, and have been educating and entertaining visitors with incredible aerial displays, set against the Burren landscape. Visitors will marvel at these impressive birds of prey with daily interactive flying displays that will delight and excite. Eagles, Owls, Vultures, and Hawks all reside at Aillwee.

Daily scheduled flying displays last for 45 minutes, but be sure to keep some time aside to say hello to all the birds in the centre. The centre’s purpose is primarily educational and conservational, along with demonstrations of these incredible and impressive birds skills and abilities, all the while actively fundraising for Raptor conservation monitoring efforts within Ireland and worldwide.

The Farm Shop at Aillwee is a hidden gem where visitors can watch traditional, sustainable farmhouse methods used in creating the unique award winning Burren Gold Cheese. Sampling, of course, is encouraged, and you can taste several varieties of creamy, buttery fudge too!

For the adventurer, foodie, and explorer in you, discover it all at Aillwee Burren Experience.
