Clare Island is the largest of Clew Bay’s islands, which lies roughly 5km off the coast of county Mayo. The island is accessible by ferry only, and Clare Island Fast Ferries operate daily ferry crossings from Roonagh Pier. Owned and operated by the O’Malley family, Clare Island natives, who have been seafarers for generations.

Clare Island’s magnificent silhouette dominates the Atlantic horizon and the island guards the entrance to Clew Bay. Its natural beauty and rich history and culture make it a must visit on any trip to the west of Ireland. Its varied terrain makes it a haven for hill walkers, the stunning blue flag beach with its white sands and clear blue waters would not be out of place in a more tropical location, and the cliffs along the northern coastline are said to be among the most magnificent in Europe.

The island is also home to the famous O’Malley Castle, acquired by infamous Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley during her conquests. Grace is an inspiration to women worldwide as at a time when men were seen as superior, there was no man more courageous or capable when it came to leadership and dominance than the Pirate Queen.

Clare Island Fast Ferries currently have two ferries in operation. The first ferry, ‘True Light’, is a 38 passenger ferry that provides a year round link between the island and the mainland, with the journey taking just 10 minutes. They also operate ‘Tormore’, a 96 passenger ferry. There is ample seating both indoors and outdoors, and there are toilet facilities on board. Passengers can avail of 10% off their ticket price when booking online. Pre-booking is strongly advised.
