The West Clare peninsula is an area of unspoilt, natural beauty wedged between the roaring Atlantic to the north, and the more tranquil Shannon estuary to the south. At its most westerly point, Loop Head the river Shannon ends its 212.5 mile journey from the Shannon Pot in county Cavan, and enters the Atlantic ocean.
It is in the final 30 miles of the Shannon that a large group of bottlenose dolphins can be found, and is where Dolphin Discovery Kilrush will take you on an unforgettable dolphin watching tour. This special area of conservation is both a feeding and breeding ground and during your trip, you might be lucky enough to encounter some new born calves.
Your cruise will depart Kilrush marina and head through the lock gates and onto the estuary. The trip takes about two hours and is one of the most thrilling experiences to be had along the Wild Atlantic Way. Every encounter is different and you can experience the excitement of seeing the dolphins leap clear out of the water, and swimming alongside the boat. It is important to remember that these are wild animals, and although they have a sighting success rate of over 98%, sightings are not guaranteed.
Prior booking is advisable at least one day before your intended trip. Bookings can be made online through their booking system, www.discoverdolphins.ie or by contacting their office on +353 85 250 5512.
