“Welcome to Glencolmcille Folk Village, we hope you feel safe and enjoy your visit here. We have a new entry system through our gate and visa machines at three points to allow you to use contactless payment where possible. When you enter we have safety advice at the gate, with a warm water and sanitizing station for you all to use on entry. There are also sanitizing stations throughout the folk village. Masks should be worn and if you don’t have one; can be purchased on entry. Due to the small size of the museum cottages we have a number on each door of max people allowed in. From Monday 20th July 2020, masks will be compulsory in shops in Ireland, the same will go for the shop and ticket office at the Folk Village, so please bring your mask!!! Most of all enjoy your visit, relax, take in the history, views and taste of Glencolmcille.”
Glencolmcille Folk Village: This thatched-roof replica of a rural village in Ireland’s most north westerly county offers a glimpse into daily life as it was during past centuries.
The Folk Village Museum is a cluster of several small cottages, called a ‘clachan’, perched on a hillside overlooking the sandy curve of Glen Bay Beach in the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking area) of South West Donegal. Designed, built and maintained by the local people, the Folk Village is one of Ireland’s best living-history museums.
Visitors may wander at leisure through the Village, or join one of our excellent guided tours. Take a look at how our ancestors lived, cooked, the beds they lay on, the tools they used, their means of lighting and heat. Learn how they developed rich traditions in music, dance and crafts despite the material hardships of daily life.
