Discover the literary heart of county Kerry at Kerry Writers Museum and celebrate the stories of the past. Gaze through the windows of wonder and journey deep into the landscape, history, and folklore that inspired Kerry’s much loved writers.

Kerry is a truly special place, and for me personally, it is a place dear to my heart in so many ways. Its beauty, its history and its people have inspired generations of writers, playwrights, and poets, whose works have gone on to win international acclaim.

Officially opened in April 2001, this fascinating museum has developed into a dynamic community enterprise, catering for visitors to Listowel and working with local groups and schools in developing artistic and cultural activities. As the main driver of tourism in north Kerry, the museum enriches the lives of people young and old, in both the community and beyond, as a centre for the promotion of Ireland’s storytelling heritage.

At Kerry Writers Museum, you are invited to follow the storyteller and discover the lives of some of the country’s finest creators of stories. From John B Keane to Brendan Kennelly, you will be transported into a world of comedy, love, mystery, and magic as you weave your way through the writers rooms. Experience the uniquely designed themed installations in each writer’s room and view original artefacts and materials of the writers.

Self guided tours are available daily on demand and last for 1 and a half hours. They include a specially recorded audio tour from local storyteller Bryan Murphy, taking you on a journey through the ages. Guided tours are available for groups of 10 or more and are brought to life by costumed characters for a performance based tour full of stories, poetry and songs. For younger visitors, follow Púca the hare, museum mascot, and discover interactive stories specifically designed to engage young minds.

Discover the stories and immerse yourself in the rich literary history of Kerry, and book a visit to this must see attraction in this beautiful part of the country.
