Killiane Castle Country House And Farm – A Five Star Experience In Ireland’s ‘Sunny South East’

Relax into the sumptuous luxury of Killiane Castle Country House and let the outside world just fade away, knowing you have found the ideal place to stay in Wexford. Rated as a five star bed and breakfast by Failte Ireland, this 17th century country house exudes a relaxed atmosphere amidst its idyllic, tranquil, rural surroundings, yet only minutes from Wexford town. The adjoining 15th century Norman castle stands proudly alongside.

The Mernagh family have been welcoming guests to their home for over 50 years, creating a home away from home for all who stay. For over a century the family have farmed the land here, nurturing and caring for the environment. Sustainable living is part of the fabric of their being. Kathleen Mernagh first began taking guests in 1972, supplementing her family’s income from their dairy farm. Along with her husband Jack, she raised 5 boys here, running the guesthouse while Jack ran the 230 acre farm. Over the years Kathleen brought this incredible bed and breakfast accommodation to five star standard with both Failte Ireland and the AA. These achievements were due to her unwavering warm welcome for her guests, attention to detail and customer service combined with the continued refurbishment of the property. Kathleen and Jack built a first class experience at Killiane Castle, providing unrivalled hospitality to all guests who stayed here through the years.

Kathlee’s son Paul, alongside his wife Patrycja, joined Kathleen in the business in 2014, both bringing extensive experience in the tourism and hospitality sector, inheriting the same innate passion that Kathleen has for what they do, ensuring guests continue to experience the same first class hospitality at Killiane that they always have. Their accommodation includes ten individually designed ensuite rooms that provide ultimate comfort and warmth, with all the expected modern facilities. Reached by a magnificent 17th century staircase, the eight bedrooms occupy the first and second floors. The Castle courtyard hosts two rooms located at ground level. The stunning views from the rooms take in the gardens and green fields that surround them, where cattle peacefully graze. Standard room facilities include orthopaedic mattresses, electric blankets, ensuite bathroom or shower, flatscreen TV, a wide selection of toiletries, tea/coffee, bottled spring water from their well, WiFi, and complimentary refreshments on arrival served with home baked cakes and breads.

The breakfast at Killiane is a real treat. The buffet table features a wide range of homemade fruit dishes, homemade granola, cereals, and yoghurt, and is followed by your dish of choice from their extensive menu of freshly cooked hot breakfasts. They use their own free range eggs, locally sourced bacon and sausages, along with homemade bread and conserves. Fruit and veg from their own garden is included as the seasons allow.

When it comes to their on site amenities, guests can enjoy an hour at the golf driving range, or a game of croquet on the lawn. Soak up the rich history as you explore the 15th century castle, take a walk through the grove lined with mature birch trees and listen to the birds singing, then relish a relaxing evening in the drawing room with a glass of wine from their honesty bar.

Killiane Castle provides the ideal base when visiting Wexford, the cornerstone of Ireland’s Ancient East. From heritage, arts and culture, to stunning beaches, outdoor experiences and more adventurous activities that will take your breath away, there is much to explore and entertain in Wexford, all while enjoying the benefits of a warm and cosy place to rest and rejuvenate at this special, award winning guest house, where your comfort is their priority.
