Trim Castle
Few places in Ireland hold more Medieval buildings than the heritage town of Trim, County Meath.
Trim Castle is the largest Anglo-Norman fortification in Ireland and it took Hugh de Lacy and his successors 30 years to build it. Construction of the massive three storied Keep, the stronghold of the castle, began in 1176 on the site of an earlier wooden fortress. The massive twenty sided tower is cruciform in shape and was protected by a ditch, curtain wall and moat.
The castles stony outline against a dramatic Irish sky brings images of brave and valliant warriors to mind and its no wonder that makers of the movie “Braveheart” chose it as the shooting location for their epic movie.
