Boyle Abbey
Boyle Abbey is a Cistercian Monastery that was founded in the 12th century by monks from the Mellifont Abbey and was one of the most powerful of the early Cistercian foundations in Ireland and Connacht.
It was devastated when Cromwellian forces occupied the abbey in 1659 and once again in the centuries that followed when it was used to accommodate a military garrison. Despite such destruction , Boyle Abbey remains well preserved and impressive to this day.
